Fashion: Capsule Wardrobe Manifesto (ish)

I thought since so many of my 2013 goals started out here, I would post this here as well.  I'm beginning the process of paring down my wardrobe, working to create something that looks like a set of interconnected capsule wardrobes.  Clothing wise, I want something more uniform, something more suited to what I like ascetically and the life I live.

Realistically I need to contend with four seasons, work and life outside of work, as well as my love of the occasional romp through the woods.  For now I'm working mainly on defining what it is that I like in terms of colors, garment types, and clothing construction.  I'm also hoping to get a vague sense of what styles suit what aspects of my life, and what sort of "uniforms" I could lean toward developing for these various aspects.

First up there's the issue of color.  My taste for color varies throughout the year but there are a few staple elements.  Black is a favorite of mine, as are grey based or muddy tones, darker jewel tons in the winter, shades leaning toward pastel in the summer and early fall.  I prefer grey in the summer (it's a summer favorite  of mine) but find that it's also a bit of a winter staple, a compromise between the darker black and the usual holiday colors.

In terms of patterns I prefer solid colors with interesting textures or items with a more classic, clean cut.  If patterns are to be had, plaid, white on white, black on black, or navy (or perhaps black) with white polka dots rank highly.

Silhouette wise, I prefer rounded necklines, nothing too high, crew cut shirts and blouses drive me nuts.  I prefer tops fitted below the bust or at the natural waist, not at the hips.  Skirts I prefer to be fuller, if not at least a bit flared, although I won't say no to a narrower a-line skirt if it's long and loose enough not to restrict my ability to move.  I prefer shorter skirts with leggings, knee length at most, although long maxi skirts are preferable for days spent out in the sun, particularly if there's a bit of a breeze.

My favorite clothing combination is tunics with leggings, or t-shirts with jeggings. Scarves are my preferred fashion accessory.  I also like long necklaces with clustered charms.  Silver outranks gold by far although I would like to experiment with brown and gold.  I prefer sweaters and cardigans to sweatshirts, although I'm beginning to discover I'm quite picky about cardigans.  I prefer knit cardigans with a looser fit.  Tightly knit fabrics or heavy cotton is to be avoided at all costs.

I prefer natural fibers to synthetics, wool being my favorite hands down.  Dark denim and cashmere are two other favorites of mine, as well anything with accents of leather orsilk.  Tweed is a winter favorite of mine as is flannel plaid.

Ideally, black and greys serve as foundation colors alongside white in the summer, and dark denim when applicable.  Red I like as an accent color, particularly against navy with bits of white, or all black, although brown is also suited as an accent  for black.  Navy can be worn with black stockings and shoes, but I'm not sure I would reverse the color scheme.

Shoe wise I wear only flats, preferring sandals for most of the year and boots for the rest.  Oxfords and flat dress shoes are also permissible.  Tennis shoes are not allowed, but sneakers are worn (only) when required by circumstance.  Messenger bags and backpacks replace purses and clutches in my life, particularly those that are multifunctional.

Definite no's include bright colors, deep v-necks, tops or dresses that are baggy around the bust, strapless items, and crop tops.

Below I've included a visual guide to the styles I prefer to wear.  I'm intending to use this as a template when I sit down to decide what pieces in my wardrobe have to go and what pieces I'm missing.  All the pieces shown are in greyscale partly because I love the monocrome look but also because I didn't want to be distracted by color and pattern at this point in the game.

Teaser Tuesday - April 14th

"My mother would never let the hearth die in her home," Margret said. She felt Agnes turn to look at her, but didn't meet her gaze. "She believed that as long as a light burned in the house, the Devil couldn't get in. Not even during the witching hour." Agnes was quiet. "What do you believe?" she asked eventually. Margret extended her hands towards the flames. "I think a fire is a useful thing to keep a body warm," she said. - Burial Rites by Hannah Kent Teaser Tuesday is  hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading . Teaser Tuesday - July 29th

Lack of perspective in literature (or in readers) often causes a contemporary condition I've heard referred to as "presentism"; that is, a disposition to judge all literature by the narrow standards of present time and present culture.  This leads to the phenomena such as the denunciation of classic novels such as Huckleberry Finn , on grounds that they deal with issues such as slavery, women's civil rights, ect., in a way not consistent with the notion of present-day political correctness. - "Presentism" The Outlandish Companion by Diana Gabaldon Teaser Tuesday is  hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading . Earth Day aka "Green Love" 2008

Leafy Tree Pendant from OneElf Earth Day’s fast approaching and I’m super excited. My ‘hug a tree’ shirt’s ready and waiting and I’m impatiently counting down the hours. Yes I’m a giant geek, but it’s the one day where spreading the green love is totally socially acceptable. Although I will still try and refrain from yelling at people who chuck plastic bottles in the trash; I will not refrain from rolling my eyes at people who look at me funny when I remove perfectly good rolls of wrapping paper from the trash. It’s going to be fun. However since it is Earth Day I know everyone’s being berated with things like ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and ‘turn the water off when you brush your teeth’. Important, yes, but I think there’s a bit of a bigger picture that gets missed in all that, so I’m going for something different. I’m not going to talk about it, at least not today. Today I’m talking about worms. Yes, I’m finally writing a real entry about something, and yes it’s about worms. ...
