24in48 Readathon: July 2019 Wrapup

WHAT I READ: There were lots of audiobooks as I’d expected, but I was able to do a lot more physical reading this time which was really nice. I finished three books [Women Talking (Miriam Toews), Before She Sleeps (Bina Shah), and Resurrection Bay (Emma Viskic)] and two audiobooks [Among the Missing (Morag Joss) and The Echo Killing (Christi Daugherty)] and read a smattering of other things, although less than last time. Picking shorter books that I was really excited to read really helped with motivation particularly later in the day when I was tired and my brain was looking for some other form of stimulation (I’ve never missed YouTube that much in my life). In total I read 1,524 pages which averages out to about 63.5 pages per hour. THOUGHTS (WHAT WAS EASY? HARD? WHAT WAS DIFFERENT THAN ANTICIPATED): Overall I did more physical reading than I’d expected, particularly since I had a pretty bad headache the first day, but I wasn’t as miserably tired as I was in January and I thi

HOURS SINCE READATHON START: 43 hours 28 minutes HOURS READ: 24 hours 00 minutes WHAT I’VE BEEN READING: I’m listening to ‘The Red Word’ putting in my last five minutes of the readathon as I write this. I’ve managed to blow through ‘Resurrection Bay’ which I think is my favorite read of the weekend. The pacing was great, and the characters, their relationships, were fantastic, although I do feel a bit betrayed by the ending. ‘Before She Sleeps’ also was a bit dissatisfying in the end. I’d still recommend it, thematically the ending worked, but it was disappointing, it felt too easy and emotionally cheap and while, in some ways, that’s exactly why it works, I wanted so much more than that which brings me to the fact that I haven’t managed to finish ‘The Red Word’, topically it’s compelling, and particularly timely, but plot wise it’s so meandering that I’m struggling to care. I had such high hopes, but two readathons in and I’m not sure why I’m so insistent in finishing it. But th

HOURS SINCE READATHON START: 37 hours 04 minutes HOURS READ: 18 hours 06 minutes WHAT I’VE BEEN READING: It finally feels like I’m getting somewhere. I finished ‘The Echo Killing’ just before lunch; 9/10 would recommend if you’re looking for a good dogged crime reporter mystery. I’ve picked up ‘The Red Word’ again, hoping to finish it today. I’m also planning on finishing ‘Before She Sleeps’, ‘Ms. Marvel’, and ‘Last Pick’. I don’t think I’ll have much time after that but I may be able to squeeze in the start of ‘Resurrection Bay’. 24in48 Readathon July 2019 Update #2

HOURS SINCE READATHON START: 21 hours 10 minutes HOURS READ: 11 hours 52 minutes WHAT I’VE BEEN READING: I wasn’t expecting to have to deal with a power outage during the readathon. It didn’t last long, but it did put a dent in my reading time, running around trying to make sure I’d still have reading time (aka light) if I needed it later. I’ve started ‘The Yiddish Policemen’s Union’ and decided to shelve it until after the readathon. It’s not my favorite writing style and I’m looking for easier reads now that we’re in the second half of the weekend. I also started ‘Before She Sleeps’ which is looking promising. The world building and dystopian elements are intriguing, although I’m a bit worried about how the whole thing is going to end. I also ended up with a copy of ‘The Echo Killing’ after all. My hold came in five minutes after I finished ‘Among the Missing’ which was a wonderful coincidence. Assuming the book continues the way it started I’m looking forward to the rest of

24in48 Readaton: July 2019 Update #1

HOURS SINCE READATHON START: 13 hours 57 minutes HOURS READ: 5 hours 47 minutes WHAT I’VE BEEN READING: I’d been hoping to get more reading done this morning, but between the heat and my allergies I’ve already had to take a nap. That being said I’m half done with ‘Women Talking’ and almost done with the audiobook I picked up, ‘Among the Missing’. I’m enjoying ‘Women Talking’ a lot, although I’m not surprised, I do love Toew’s writing, but ‘Among the Missing’ isn’t exactly what I’d expected. It’s holding my attention but I can’t say I’d recommend it. I realized the other day that I was definitely going to need more audiobooks for this weekend and that I probably wasn’t going to be able to get my hands on a copy of ‘The Echo Killing’ so for that moment when I would otherwise panic checkout the first book I saw, a list of other options: Muslim Girl by Amani Al-Khatahtbeh and Born Both by Hida Viloria, not to mention I do have a couple of other half started audiobooks languishing

24in48 Readathon: July 2019 TBR

I’ve been excitedly awaiting the next 24in48 readathon (coming up the weekend of the 20th) thinking I was going to have a lot of reading to catch up on for my Goodreads challenge but it turns out I’m well ahead of where I need to be, which is a great excuse to bust out all the fun books I’ve been waiting to read (for no particular reason) and just go crazy. So far I have copies of Ms. Marvel vol 10, and Last Pick as my graphic novels for the weekend and I also have holds on Women Talking (Miraim Toews) and the audiobook of Wild Embers (Nikita Gill). I’d been hoping to get a physical or at least an ebook copy of the latter since I prefer my poetry that way, but my library doesn’t have it. I’m also waiting to see which of the following are available: The Wish Child (Catherine Chidgey), Before She Sleeps (Bina Shah), and Resurrection Bay (Emma Viskic). In terms of audiobooks, which were the bulk of my 24in48 last time, I’m going to try and finish up the Red Word (Sara Henstra) and
