Things I Learned About Vlogging

On and off this week I spent quite a bit of time trying to put together first, an intro video and later a book review and a book haul for the youtube channel I started in conjunction with this project.  I want so badly to post something, anything, to find an excuse to play with this medium that's so new to me and which inspires so many new ways of looking at things.  Unfortunately this is proving more difficult than expected, which I did expect I just wasn't quite expecting there to be quite this big of a learning curve.  I'm not looking for something perfect.  Perfect would be boring because it would require cutting out all the quirky little things I know other people love, even if I don't.  But I wanted something that at least had the following:

     1.  Decent lighting (the lighting in my room is horrible)
     2.  A backdrop that doesn't consist of piles of stuff or stacks of boxes
     3.  Decent sound quality/me not mumbling continuously so people can understand me

I'm still working on solutions for combinations of these issues, so far I've discovered that although my webcam is lower quality than the video from my camera it has two advantages, notably, it comes with built in adjustable lighting (from my laptop screen), and I can see myself while recording which means I don't film an entire video with a hanger seemingly stuck out of the side of my head.  Unfortunately the sound recording from my webcam is cruddy (although it doesn't pick up background noise like the wind and the heat kicking on), so it's not a total win win.

I'm still planning on getting a video posted this weekend (Sunday eta: ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) even if it means posting something I'm not totally happy with, but I may still torture myself with some fiddling since I would really love to use my camera in all its shiny newness.  And if all else fails, I can work on the mumbling and the overexcited rush of words that comes along with me geeking out.  It's still January, there's eleven and a half more months before I have to decide whether or not this whole youtube/booktubing thing is for me.

Teaser Tuesday - April 14th

"My mother would never let the hearth die in her home," Margret said. She felt Agnes turn to look at her, but didn't meet her gaze. "She believed that as long as a light burned in the house, the Devil couldn't get in. Not even during the witching hour." Agnes was quiet. "What do you believe?" she asked eventually. Margret extended her hands towards the flames. "I think a fire is a useful thing to keep a body warm," she said. - Burial Rites by Hannah Kent Teaser Tuesday is  hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading . Teaser Tuesday - July 29th

Lack of perspective in literature (or in readers) often causes a contemporary condition I've heard referred to as "presentism"; that is, a disposition to judge all literature by the narrow standards of present time and present culture.  This leads to the phenomena such as the denunciation of classic novels such as Huckleberry Finn , on grounds that they deal with issues such as slavery, women's civil rights, ect., in a way not consistent with the notion of present-day political correctness. - "Presentism" The Outlandish Companion by Diana Gabaldon Teaser Tuesday is  hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading . Earth Day aka "Green Love" 2008

Leafy Tree Pendant from OneElf Earth Day’s fast approaching and I’m super excited. My ‘hug a tree’ shirt’s ready and waiting and I’m impatiently counting down the hours. Yes I’m a giant geek, but it’s the one day where spreading the green love is totally socially acceptable. Although I will still try and refrain from yelling at people who chuck plastic bottles in the trash; I will not refrain from rolling my eyes at people who look at me funny when I remove perfectly good rolls of wrapping paper from the trash. It’s going to be fun. However since it is Earth Day I know everyone’s being berated with things like ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and ‘turn the water off when you brush your teeth’. Important, yes, but I think there’s a bit of a bigger picture that gets missed in all that, so I’m going for something different. I’m not going to talk about it, at least not today. Today I’m talking about worms. Yes, I’m finally writing a real entry about something, and yes it’s about worms. ...
