Outlander (1/6: Intervenes): These Things Go Together

For those of you not obsessively trolling the internet for any small bit of news, Outlander premieres on Starz tomorrow night.  It's based on a series by Diana Gabaldon by the same name and follows the adventures of Claire Beauchamp after she falls through a pair of standing stones and back through time from post WWII Britain to Scotland in 1743. I won't give anything away, partly because I haven't done a proper book review and I don't want to spoil my own fun, but also because for people discovering the series for the first time, there's nothing quite like watching the entire thing unfold before you.  That being said there are a couple of items that are central to the books that will come as no surprise.  As such, here's a couple of my favorite things corresponding to some of them. top down from left to right: Earl Grey Rooibos or any more proper English tea Perfume (diy) or the perfume bottle necklace from The Parlor Apothecary Antique alarm...

Edinburgh: These Things Go Together Travel Edition

I was going to sit down and write up a post about the last couple of weeks in Vancouver (campiiiing) but I kept bumping up against Outlander and decided I better deal with it and the Edinburgh feels it inspired before I started to try and convince you that beautiful blue mountains in the distance were really green covered crags and hills. First up, is a bit of an explanation of the series; I pick a theme, a season, a place, a book, whatever strikes my fancy, set the mood, paint a picture with some of my favorite things, and then explain or clarify if need be.  For today we're talking about Scotland, particularly Edinburgh since that's what I'm most familiar with. To start, every traveler needs a bit of an education or at least some inspiration, be it from a guidebook, from a book book, or from history.  Neal Oliver's A History of Scotland either the BBC Documentary or the book that followed are a great place to start if you're looking for some nonfiction.  For...

Oh Canada… thank you for your awesomness

I’ve gone and fallen in love with Flashpoint .  I hadn’t intended to.  It started out a lot like most other things with me watching a couple of episodes with *insert favorite actor here* (Pacale Hutton, in this case, for those of you who are wondering).  The episodes were good, really good, but I chalked it up to the amount of glee I had over cop uniforms and the CN Tower.  I’m really not hard to please when it comes to all things Canadian, but then I watched another episode.  I had an hour before bed, no biggie, but one turned into two, I feel in love with the characters and I was hooked.  And since it’s been awhile since we’ve had some Canada <3 on this blog, here’s a bit of Toronto themed goodness. Summer, summer

Despite the cats' incessant needs to cuddle, summer has arrived and is in full swing. I'm contemplating moving into my bath tub permanently (or installing a pool for my bed). Lying sprawled out on my floor listening to the neighbors mow their lawn yet again (can you believe they had to start in March?!) I'm attempting to kick this early summer off with a bit of optimism. As such I thought I'd put together an extended 'these things go together' list.      sources on the click-throughs :) Girls in Trucks is an awesome read, period.  With it’s summery southern setting and wonderful humor, it’s perfect for this time of year. I love any excuse to wear a dress and summer with it’s warm weather has a perfect excuse every day. Remembering to pick up a new pair of gardening gloves or hiking boots is never hard, finding a good alternative to chemical laden bug sprays is, which is why I love citronella candles. Green smoothies, I honestly can’t say enou...

On a Hill Lone and Gray

It's been feeling a bit chilly around here the last couple of days.  If it wasn't August I'd assume fall had come early.  I hadn't meant for the last couple of days to come together into a sort of celebration of autumn but they have. Winter's Bones: Watch the trailer then go watch the movie.  There's not much more to say about it than that. photo from myrecipes.com Pumpkin Pie: I can't think of a food that screams fall more than pumpkin pie (excluding turkey and the fixings of course).  I baked up a pie using coconut milk as a dairy replacement.  I wasn't disappointed. Mrs. Darcy Cardigan: ( Rav Link ) There really is no reason for my obsession with this sweater, but I need one in my life.  Granted I've been saying that forever and still haven't knit one.  I should change that...

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm taking a couple of days off from the '30 Days of Knititng' meme for the holiday.  Before I go and leave you all hanging (trust me my stash isn't that interesting) I figured I'd do one more post.  Sort of a 'which of these don't belong' type deal only not as all of the following go together. Let me set the scene first.  It's a late fall/early winter afternoon, gray and a bit rainy.  You have a fire going or a row of candles laid out on the table beside you.  You're sitting by the window looking out at the fallen leaves and the deep blue of the mountain in the distance.  You're sitting in a rocking chair with your favorite blanket and a cat purring nearby.  You have the stereo on, a cup of your favorite tea steaming next to your latest book and a basket full of yarn and a new project freshly cast on.  This is where the following comes in. The Civil Wars: Barton Hollow (above) is the first single off their new album.  If it's ...
