Capsule Wardrobe :: Boston Fall 2014

I’m headed out first thing tomorrow to spend a long weekend in Boston with my family. I’ve slowly been making progress with my wardrobe an am happy to announce it took me about five minutes to decide what to pack. It’s not the most exciting capsule wardrobe, it’s pretty uniform, but I wanted to share it for a couple of reasons. First, this is the first time it’s really hit me how nice it is to have a concept of uniforms and to have a capsule wardrobe to accommodate this. Second, I’ve been wanting to start documenting the clothes I pack because it makes it easier to pack later for similar longer trips since seeing what I packed will hopefully remind me of what did and didn’t work.

I’m expecting some rain and then some colder weather on Sunday and Monday. I’m packing assuming I won’t need to worry about covering up because of the sun which is a nice change from this summer, but it also means I’m not packing any long sleeved shirts when maybe I should. I am, however, packing three t-shirts, two sweaters (one thin cotton and one thick wool), a thin rain jacket and an umbrella. My pants and sneakers are the same ones I’ve been wearing almost continuously since May. I packed some jewelry although I don’t know if I’ll wear it. I also have a beanie, a battered fedora, and a pair of lightweight gloves which I won’t wear but I don’t want to take out of my bag.

Boston - Fall 2014

This all fits in the top section of my book bag along with my electronic miscellany, camera and ipod, as well as toiletries and some food. I’ll probably cram a book and a notebook into the front pocket. My other bag (personal item) mainly has food although it does have some stuff for my sister in it. My suitcase is full of stuff for my sister. I anticipate coming back with it full of stuff for me, if only because I can’t seem to stay away from Trader Joes.

Earth Day aka "Green Love" 2008

Leafy Tree Pendant from OneElf Earth Day’s fast approaching and I’m super excited. My ‘hug a tree’ shirt’s ready and waiting and I’m impatiently counting down the hours. Yes I’m a giant geek, but it’s the one day where spreading the green love is totally socially acceptable. Although I will still try and refrain from yelling at people who chuck plastic bottles in the trash; I will not refrain from rolling my eyes at people who look at me funny when I remove perfectly good rolls of wrapping paper from the trash. It’s going to be fun. However since it is Earth Day I know everyone’s being berated with things like ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and ‘turn the water off when you brush your teeth’. Important, yes, but I think there’s a bit of a bigger picture that gets missed in all that, so I’m going for something different. I’m not going to talk about it, at least not today. Today I’m talking about worms. Yes, I’m finally writing a real entry about something, and yes it’s about worms. ...

12 on 12: September 2015

I had forgotten to do my 12 on 12 on the 12th this month so when I went out on Saturday I was only all too willing to get a bit snap happy. The day started out back in my old neighborhood at the annual library book sale. I stocked up and then we headed to my favorite places to shop: the farmers market, Trader Joes, and Wegmans. After that, we stopped off at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park since Saturday was also the Smithsonian's annual Museum Day Live . The park was beautiful, we had a nice walk and even ran into a wedding party. We took the long way home and had a great time meandering through the country looking at old barns, cows, and windmills.

Teaser Tuesday - July 29th

Lack of perspective in literature (or in readers) often causes a contemporary condition I've heard referred to as "presentism"; that is, a disposition to judge all literature by the narrow standards of present time and present culture.  This leads to the phenomena such as the denunciation of classic novels such as Huckleberry Finn , on grounds that they deal with issues such as slavery, women's civil rights, ect., in a way not consistent with the notion of present-day political correctness. - "Presentism" The Outlandish Companion by Diana Gabaldon Teaser Tuesday is  hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading .
